About

I’m a writer and a creative producer with a particular interest in culture, community, class and place. I’m originally from Birkenhead, spent most of my adult life in Liverpool and have subsequently lived and worked in London, Bradford, Hull and Leeds.

Outlets I have contributed writing to include: The Guardian, The Big Issue, New Statesman, The Quietus, FACT magazine, Caught by the River, Journal of Class and Culture, AnOther, Engage Journal, Museum Practice, Corridor8, Social Art Library, Liverpool Biennial, Museums Journal, Liverpool University Press, Arts Professional, University of Manchester, Aesthetica and Mute.

I’ve led arts and heritage projects and programmes for nearly fifteen years for organisations ranging from FACT, Artlink Hull and The Tetley to National Museums Liverpool, Sir John Soane’s Museum and Metal Culture. I’m now Lead Culture Producer North for the British Library. I am a recipient of the Marsh Award for Excellence in Visual Arts Engagement for my community based work.

I’ve contributed to several books and exhibition catalogues and had short fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry published in various outlets.

In voluntary roles, I am a member of the Steering Group of Museum as Muck, a supportive network of working class museum people working to make change in the sector. Previously, from 2018 – 20 I was Vice Chair of Creative Case North, exploring and promoting the Creative Case for Diversity in the North of England and I was Chair of Cultural Collisions Hull, the strategic group of Hull based cultural organisations, from 2017 – 2019.

I am presently a visiting lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University. I’ve also delivered lectures, talks and workshops for organisations including the University of Leeds, Engage, the Co-Creating Change Network, the Museums Association, Leeds Arts University and the Arts Council of Wales. I received an Art Fund curatorial grant to research socially-engaged arts practice in Detroit and Chicago in 2016.

I am always interested in new commissions, especially in relation to the subjects mentioned above, and in making contact with people interested in similar fields. You can contact me here.
